Gimme BANKS

Updated: Jul 4, 2019

On April 29th American Singer Songwriter BANKS released her first single of 2019, "Gimme". Personally BANKS has been a huge influence on my music. I love her moody and sensual projects including Goddess and The Altar. Since she hasn't released a single since September of 2017, and her last album came out in 2016, I was super elated when I saw she was gonna put out a new track. Let's review.

GIMME

Gimme starts out with a vocal loop from Bank's which is chopped and has heavy effects placed on it. I love this because it gradually introduces us to the eerie mix. Next pads and a plucking electronic bass come in. I love a lot of the staccato elements of this piece. The production is a bit different then what BANKS usually uses but it's still her sound. After the verse starts background vocals are added. Though her chanting is great, I feel that the background vocals here are a bit too distorted making them feel grating on the ears. A little more equalizing of certain frequencies would've been helpful. It's only slightly unpleasant though and in the big scheme of the song it doesn't make much of a difference.

The chorus is definitely the best part. A synthesizer pops in glitching and giving this song it's trippy and mysterious vibe. BANKS has mastered the ultimate climatic chorus and she demonstrates this yet again on "Gimme". It surprises you in a great way with it's strong forward approach and doesn't waste any time getting to the point as BANKS sings repeatedly "Gimme, gimme, what I want, what I deserve". The drums are subtle which is perfect as to not make the song feel cluttered or crammed. I absolutely love it and it definitely has had me dancing in my car time and time again.

The bridge is also amazing as more drums are added in leading to the final chorus. I absolutely adore BANKS' use of her falsetto on this part. It adds a nice contrast to the rest of the song and also is just seductive. The final chorus is great and begins with an animal sound at the beginning. This whole composition is wonderful and leaves you wanting to listen to the song again and again. I wish the static at the end was taken out but other than that it's perfect.

I give "Gimme" a 9/10. Perfection.
